Adigio Benítez has been born in 1924 in Santigo de Cuba. At the age of 18 he began to study art at the academy "San Alejandro" in Havana, but he had to interrupt his studies a few years later, for financial reasons, which did not prevent him to denounce the social miseries of his time in a couple of great paintings, that were imidiatly confiscated and made him go to jail. After the revolution his works became exemplary for the so called social art, while he himself became in 1962 one of the founders of the National Art School, ENA, where he tought during the next twenty years. "With his series of paintings, which relate to the art of Origami, Benítez distances himself from the social themes that charaterized his works in the past and demonstrates that, despite his age, he is still ready to experiment and able to employ his great technical capabilities". |
